On April 6, 2025, which is Ram Navami, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to open the New Pamban Bridge, India’s first vertical lift rail bridge.
The deteriorating Pamban Bridge, which was closed in 2022 because of corrosion issues, will be replaced with this 2.05-kilometer span.
The new bridge, which was constructed by train Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) at a cost of Rs 279.63 crore, is expected to improve train connectivity between the Indian mainland and Rameswaram Island, a major pilgrimage site.
A central span of the New Pamban Bridge can rise vertically to a height of 22 meters thanks to an inventive vertical lift mechanism.
Navigating the Palk Strait is made easier by this design, which permits marine traffic to flow freely beneath the bridge.
The vertical lift technology minimizes the disturbance to train services by using an electro-mechanical mechanism that can be lifted in just five minutes, in contrast to standard bridges that swing open or pivot.
Counterweights are used in the engineering of vertical lift bridges to balance the lift span during motion. The counterweight bears the majority of the weight when the span is lowered, while the sheaves support both the span and the counterweight when lifting. Greater loads can be carried with this design while still being safe and effective. In accordance with contemporary railway requirements, the New Pamban Bridge is built to support high-speed trains and double tracks.
Since PM Modi lay the project’s foundation stone in November 2019, it has been under development. Construction moved on gradually in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic’s delays, and trial runs were carried out in late 2024.
